Module 12 Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders
Schizophrenia is the cancer diagnosis of the psychiatric/psychological world. It is a devastating illness that most often strikes in the beginning of a young adult’s life just as one is beginning to live as an adult. It is an illness that can ONLY occur if one has the genetic makeup ( has the gene), unlike Major Depressive Disorder, which can happen to everyone. It can occur in childhood as Early-onset/Childhood-onset Schizophrenia, but it is rare and when it does occur in childhood, it is severe and life disrupting. Schizophrenia can only be diagnosed if there are BOTH hallucinations and delusions present. These symptoms are the core of schizophrenia and are called psychosis. There are some diagnoses that have these symptoms present, such as Major Depressive Disorder with psychosis, and Substance-induced psychosis, where in each the hallucinations and delusions (psychotic symptoms) are present because the individual has gone untreated for too long, as in the case of Major Depressive Disorder, or, in the case of Substance-induced Psychosis, where the psychotic symptoms are present because of the type of substance ingested ( i.e., Psylocibin “magic mushrooms”, PCP , aka “wet”, “sticks” or “sherms”, etc.). Hallucinogenic substances are taken BEDCAUSE they produce psychotic symptoms. The difference between these two types of psychosis and Schizophrenia is that the psychosis of Schizophrenia is endemic ( a part of) this illness and not a result of something else. Schizophrenia is not curable, but it can be successfully treated with medication, individual psychotherapy, and family/group therapy. Without this treatment, though, the individual will continue to have symptoms that interfere with successful functioning.
