In this paper you must do three things: 1., give an overview of the pertinent ethical questions; 2., give a (brief) account of how at least two authors we have read this semester have addressed these ethical questions, and 3., outline your own position on the issue.
This paper should be written in three sections. The first describes the facts of the issue and gives an account of the basic ethical questions raised (for example, if one were writing about surrogacy, this section would contain a basic description of what surrogacy is and the different kinds of surrogacy as well as the ethical dimensions of surrogacy). If needed, you may look at the summary chapters in the textbook or outside sources for factual information, provided you cite these sources properly (including your textbook). In some of my lectures you can find references to external sources that may be of use to you.
The second section should give an account of how at least two articles that we have read address the questions you raise in the first section of the paper. These should not be hyper-detailed summaries that include every argument and counter argument included in the articles; rather, give a good, general account of what position they defend and why. Think of it as a “birds eye view” of the arguments in question.
In the final section, give your answer to these questions and explain why you hold the position that you do. The reasons should be principled and philosophical and not merely personal. If you agree with what is said in one of the articles you discuss, acknowledge this and give reasons why you agree with one article rather than another. If you agree with none of the articles, explain why you think they are all mistaken and outline your own view. You may be in partial agreement with one or more articles; if so, clearly state what points you agree and disagree with and why. You may even say that you are undecided on the issue, but if you do, you must give a philosophically thoughtful account of why it is you have difficulty deciding on your own stance. Whatever your position, the objective in this section is to be clear and persuasive.
