4.3: Terracotta Warriors
No unread replies.No replies.
Discuss the religious, political, and personal components of the art of Shih Huan Ti’s (Shihuangdi) terracotta warriors. Why terracotta? Why were so many life sized statues created and then buried? What were the religious, magical, or political ideas that were expressed in this site?
Jeff’s notes:
This discussion is a focus on Emperor Qin’s great tomb site. With the terra-cotta army think of scale, numbers of figures, production process and efficiency, the tradition of Imperial tombs in Chinese courts since the Shang Dynasty and how Qin’s necropolis culminates that tradition, and how the site reflected Qin’s view toward rulership and the afterlife. You do not need to discuss every thematic issue raised in the instructions. In fact, stronger answers often focus on just one of them (such as the production process) and use it to illustrate the larger ideas that tell us about the period and Chinese rulership.
