Ag II Research Paper: Persuasive Writing
This is a program requirement. Failure to complete this paper in an acceptable manner will result in a failure of the Agriculture Program.
The Topic & Resources, Graphic Organizer, and Best Draft will count as the term 1 exam grade, which is 20% of your term 1 grade.
The final completed research paper will count as the exam grade for term 2, which is 20% of your term 2 grade.
The Research Paper allows the student to research, study, compose a persuasive paper based on an agricultural issue. It is designed to develop the student’s ability to compose a paper using the proper techniques of research, study and writing. The paper should represent independent study and be at the level of proficiency expected of that student (primarily based on Grade Level).
An Agriculture Teacher will be available after school Tuesdays (September 18 – December 4) or virtually by appointment to help students with research papers.
This paper must be a minimum of 1,200 words, which is approximately 4 pages. The paper must be typed in 12 point font using Calibri, Tahoma, or Ariel font that is double-spaced, with normal margins (a normal margin is 1 inch). A student should exceed the minimum number of words if needed to thoroughly cover the topic.
A reference page with a listing of all sources used is required as the final page of the paper. Proper APA format required. References must be current and from multiple sources. There must be a minimum of THREE (3) references. Students are expected to have both in-text citations and a reference page.
DUE DATES Please submit the following via Google Classroom. Late work is subject to penalty and will be reviewed later than on-time submissions.
November 13, 2020 – Using the Google document provided, select one topic from the three provided and list citations for your resources. Teachers have posted resources on Google Classroom that students should use. You will need to find additional resources as well.  A topic will be assigned to you if you have not selected a topic on time.  The topics are found on the Google Classroom.
THE ISSUE: Closing of Agricultural Fairs in Connecticut
THE QUESTION: Should agricultural fairs have closed in CT?
In response to COVID-19 and keeping people safe, all fairs in CT have currently been canceled or postponed until 2021 or beyond. Many of these fairs have been running for over 100 years and some even longer! These fairs help to keep the traditions of CT alive in addition to providing entertainment, craftsmanship, exhibits competitions and much more to its attendees. Fair goers are upset the fairs were cancelled and feel since they are outdoor events and so important to the traditions of this state, they should have been held with social distancing protocols put in place. YOUR TASK:

Write a persuasive paper either in favor or in opposition to closing CT agricultural fairs.  THE ISSUE: Limited access to Connecticut’s parks and beaches.
THE QUESTION: Should CT uphold laws that make state/town parks and beaches open to everyone, or for sake of limiting crowds during the pandemic, or should it limit admittance to just local residents? ABSTRACT:
State parks and beaches around the nation are trying their best to uphold their mission of providing services and outdoor recreation to people while keeping both the public and their staff safe during the COVID-19 era. However, some parks have been forced to close or keep their admittance open only to the residents of the states’ parks at a fraction of their capacity. There were some initiatives to go outside during this pandemic to get fresh air at your local state/national parks and beaches, but because of safety protocols, that initiative became near impossible except for local residents. YOUR TASK:
You will research this topic and explore publications for and against the closing of state parks and beaches to everyone. Study the provided articles and gather  your own research.  Using information from BOTH sides of the argument, form your own educated opinion. Write a persuasive paper either in favor of or in opposition to Connecticut’s closing its parks and beaches to non residents.
THE ISSUE: John Muir’s Legacy
THE QUESTION: Should America look to replace John Muir’s name and legacy with more contemporary (and more politically correct) environmentalist names.
For decades, the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations have lauded preservationist John Muir, an original founder of the environmental organization, as a towering figure in American conservationism and a man whose writings and advocacy helped to preserve Yosemite as a national park. However, contrary to the idolized opinion the public often portray’s Muir in, the Sierra Clubs’s executive director, Michael Brune, said it was time for some “truth telling” about Muir’s racist views and the white supremacist beliefs of its original members.
You will research this topic and explore publications for and against the removal of John Muir’s name and legacy. Using information from BOTH sides of the argument, form your own educated opinion. Write a persuasive paper either in favor or in opposition of removing John Muir’s name and legacy from the Sierra Club and other organizations/shrines as well as the current history portrayal of him as we knew it.
November 20, 2020 – Format will be provided in leadership class and Google Classroom. Organizer should be reviewed and returned to you on or before November 6, 2020.
December 4, 2020 – Submit the self assessment and the typed paper including parenthetical citations and works cited page. If not turned in on time, five (5) points will be deducted from the final paper. The best draft MUST be turned in. The draft will be reviewed and returned to you on or before December 18, 2020.
January 8, 2021 – Revise & submit best draft. Assess your paper and submit the rubric. Must meet length, format, and citation requirements. Five (5) points will be deducted per school day, up to thirty (30) points can be deducted, if not turned in on time. MODIFICATIONS
Students receiving Special Education services are required to meet this requirement. Accommodations and modifications will align with each student’s IEP. Please, contact the special education teacher and/or an Agriculture teacher if you have concerns.
